Unusual Volume
Overview
The Unusual Volume profile identifies groups showing elevated trading activity beyond normal expectations. It looks for either strong weighted Relative Volume at the group level or a large percentage of companies inside the group trading with unusually high relative volume. This makes it useful for spotting concentrated attention, stronger participation, and possible early breakout or breakdown conditions.
This profile updates in real time and applies filters automatically to surface groups with unusually high activity. It is useful for spotting where attention, participation, and possible institutional positioning are becoming more concentrated.
Strategy Focus
- Detect volume clusters forming across industries and themes
- Highlight groups attracting unusual attention rather than normal day-to-day flow
- Track volume-supported momentum that may lead to cleaner breakouts or breakdowns
- Compare group-level RVOL with breadth of participation inside the group
- Use unusual activity as a confirmation layer for divergence, trend, or breakout workflows
- Build workflows around liquidity, momentum, and event-driven participation
Filters Applied
This profile uses a dual OR filter to detect unusual activity:
- Relative Volume > 2: Includes groups with strong overall weighted relative volume
- Relative Volume 2+ (%) > 40: Includes groups where more than 40% of companies are trading with relative volume above 2
A group appears if it meets either condition, which helps capture both concentrated group-level volume and broad-based internal participation.
Metrics Used
Volume Behavior and Participation
- Total Volume (%): Shows how much of total market volume is coming from the group, helping confirm where activity is concentrating.
- Relative Volume: The main ranking metric. It measures current group-level volume relative to its historical average.
- Relative Volume 2+ (%): Shows the percentage of companies in the group trading with relative volume above 2, helping confirm how broad the activity is.
Group Structure
- Industry / Theme: Identifies the group so you can compare unusual activity across industries and themes.
- Tickers: Shows the number of companies in the group, which helps frame the breadth of the signal.
Price Movement
- Change Pre (%): Adds early-session context and can help show whether unusual volume started before the open.
- Change From Close (%): Tracks regular-session movement and helps judge whether unusual volume is translating into price change.
Group Ratings
- Group Rating 1 Day: Shows current session strength and helps connect unusual volume with intraday positioning.
- Group Rating 1 Year: Adds longer-term context so you can judge whether unusual activity is entering strong or weak groups.
Relative Strength Indicators
- Rel. Strength 1 Day 90+ (%): Shows how much strong short-term performance exists inside the group today.
- Rel. Strength 1 Year 90+ (%): Shows how much longer-term strength exists inside the group.
Return Context
- Return Year to Date (%): Helps compare unusual activity with the group’s broader trend.
Fundamentals Snapshot
- EPS Rating: Adds earnings-quality context when unusual volume is showing up in stronger or weaker groups.
- Sales Rating: Adds revenue-growth context and can help confirm broader quality.
- Profit Rating: Adds profitability context and helps separate stronger themes from weaker ones.
Behavioral and Setup Indicators
- Accumulation/Distribution Score: Helps show whether institutional behavior has been supportive or negative.
- Reports Earnings Within 1 Week: Highlights near-term catalysts that may explain the unusual activity.
- Top Alpha Setups: Shows whether stronger volume is also translating into concentrated setup opportunity.
Technical Confirmation
- Last Price > Prev. High (%): Helps confirm breakout behavior inside high-activity groups.
- Last Price < Prev. Low (%): Helps confirm downside pressure or failed strength inside active groups.
- Positive RSI Divergence 14D (%): Adds bullish divergence context to unusual activity.
- Negative RSI Divergence 14D (%): Adds bearish divergence context to unusual activity.
- Tight Range (%): Highlights where unusual volume may be resolving recent compression.
Default Sorting Logic
Results are sorted by Relative Volume in descending order, so the most unusually active groups appear first.
Practical Use Cases
- Identify groups with unusual activity for intraday or swing workflows
- Spot volume-confirmed breakouts or breakdowns across industries and themes
- Use Ticker Screener to isolate the companies driving the group’s volume surge
- Open Multi-Charts to compare setups across unusually active groups
- Combine volume signals with ratings, divergence, and setup density for stronger confirmation
- Track rotation into emerging themes as unusual volume begins to build
