Bearish Activity Detection

Overview

The Bearish Activity Detection profile identifies industries and themes showing broad downside momentum during the current session. It looks for groups where many companies are breaking support, gapping lower, losing relative strength, or printing fresh lows - helping you isolate real weakness instead of isolated single-name selling.

info

This profile updates in real time and applies filters automatically to surface groups showing broad bearish activity. It is useful for finding downside momentum, breakdown clusters, and areas where weakness is spreading across many companies at once.

Strategy Focus

  • Detect broad bearish momentum across industries and themes in real time
  • Highlight groups breaking support or recent lows instead of isolated weak names
  • Confirm downside pressure with breadth and participation across multiple companies
  • Track gap-down and continuation behavior during the session
  • Use volume, distribution, and Top Alpha Setups to strengthen short-side context
  • Build short, hedge, or risk-off watchlists around active downside rotation

Filters Applied

This profile uses multiple bearish activity filters joined by an OR condition. A group appears if it meets any of the following thresholds:

  • Cleared Support After Open (%) > 50
  • 20 Day Lows & -4% > 4
  • Last Price < Prev. Low (%) > 50
  • Gap Under Prev. Low (%) > 50
  • Gap Under Support (%) > 50
  • Rel. Strength 1 Day < 10 (%) > 50

These conditions are designed to capture groups showing widespread breakdown behavior, not just isolated weakness.

Metrics Used

Group Identity and Composition

  • Industry / Theme: Identifies the group so you can compare bearish activity across industries and themes.
  • Tickers: Shows how many companies are in the group, helping you judge the breadth of the move.

Breakdown and Weakness Signals

  • Cleared Support After Open (%): Shows the percentage of companies breaking below support after the open, which is a core signal of active downside pressure.
  • 20 Day Lows & -4%: Shows how many companies are making new 20-day lows while falling more than 4%, helping confirm aggressive weakness.
  • Last Price < Prev. Low (%): Shows the percentage of companies trading below their previous low, which helps confirm group-wide breakdown behavior.
  • Gap Under Prev. Low (%): Shows how many companies opened below the previous low, which helps confirm overnight bearish pressure.
  • Gap Under Support (%): Shows how many companies gapped below structural support, reinforcing the bearish signal.

Relative Weakness Breadth

  • Rel. Strength 1 Day < 10 (%): Shows the percentage of companies displaying extreme short-term underperformance.
  • Group Rating 1 Day: Adds current-session group context and helps compare matched groups.
  • Group Rating 1 Year: Adds longer-term context so you can judge whether current weakness is part of a broader decline or a reversal inside a stronger trend.
  • Rel. Strength 1 Year 90+ (%): Shows how much longer-term strength still exists inside the group, which can matter when rotation starts out of former leaders.

Price and Volume Context

  • Change Pre (%): Adds pre-market context and can help show whether weakness started before the open.
  • Change From Close (%): Tracks regular-session price movement and helps confirm follow-through.
  • Total Volume (%): Shows how much of market volume is concentrated in the group.
  • Relative Volume: Helps confirm whether the downside move is happening with stronger-than-normal participation.

Broader Performance Context

  • Return Year to Date (%): Helps place the breakdown in the context of the group’s broader yearly trend.

Additional Confirmation

  • Accumulation/Distribution Score: Adds institutional-flow context and helps confirm whether selling pressure is supported by distribution.
  • Reports Earnings Within 1 Week: Highlights near-term catalysts that may intensify weakness.
  • Top Alpha Setups: Shows whether the bearish activity is also producing concentrated setup opportunities.
  • Tight Range (%): Highlights compression that may have resolved into the current downside move.

Default Sorting Logic

Results are sorted by Group Rating 1 Day in ascending order, bringing the weakest bearish-activity groups to the top.
