Custom Strategies & Filters

MarketAlpha’s AI automatically selects the strongest Alpha Strategy direction for each ticker. When you want full control over direction bias, you can switch your screener and charts to show Long-only or Short-only strategies instead.

This is useful when you already have a directional thesis and want every risk/reward metric, path metric, and target projection to match that bias.

Long-Only or Short-Only in Two Steps

To override the AI’s Auto selection, you only need to do two things:

  1. Load a Long-only or Short-only profile in the screener
  2. Apply the same AI Strategy direction in charts so your overlays match the screener

Using the Long-Only Risk/Reward Profile

If you want to scan setups using only Long strategy metrics:

  1. Open the Profile Sidebar
  2. Go to Custom Strategies
  3. Load Long-Only Risk/Reward

Once loaded:

  • The Alpha Strategy column disappears
  • Strategy columns now show Long-only Risk/Reward and Long-only path metrics
  • Every ticker is evaluated through the same Long lens, so comparisons are consistent

Matching Charts to Long-Only

To make sure charts reflect the same strategy direction:

  1. Open any chart from your Long-only screener results
  2. Set AI Strategy to Long
  3. Save your chart settings so this applies across all charts

Now when you open charts from the screener, the overlays will match what you see in the table.

Switching to Short-Only

When your bias is bearish, the workflow is identical:

  1. Open the Profile Sidebar
  2. Go to Custom Strategies
  3. Load Short-Only Risk/Reward
  4. In charts, set AI Strategy to Short and save

If you want to return to default behavior later, reset the chart back to its default settings and switch back to an Auto strategy-based screener profile.

Building Your Own Strategy Screener

You can also build a fully custom strategy view from scratch by choosing your own strategy columns and filtering logic.

To do this:

  1. Open the Columns Sidebar and remove the default strategy columns
  2. Expand the AI Strategies folder
  3. Add the strategy column set you want:
    • Auto (AI selects Long or Short per ticker)
    • Long-only
    • Short-only

A common Long-only strategy column set is:

  • Long Risk/Reward
  • Long Path to Target
  • Days to Target

Filtering for Strong Setups

After adding your strategy columns, open the Data Filter Sidebar and refine the results using Individual Filters.

Example filters for a high-conviction Long-only scan:

  • Risk/Reward ≥ 3
  • Days to Target < 3
  • Path to Target ≤ 1

You can combine these with any other filters you prefer (liquidity, volume, patterns, proximity, earnings, or group strength).

Reviewing Results in Multi-Charts

Once you have filtered to a tight list, the fastest way to validate quality is Multi-Charts:

  1. Select the tickers you want to review
  2. Open Multi-Charts
  3. Set AI Strategy to Long (or Short) so every chart uses the same direction as your screener

This keeps your table, filters, and chart overlays aligned, and makes it much easier to compare setups quickly.

Summary

Custom Strategies let you override the AI’s Auto direction and scan the market using a consistent Long-only or Short-only framework. Load the correct profile, match the chart strategy setting, then build and filter your own strategy screens to surface only the setups that fit your bias.
