Tight Ranges

Overview

The Tight Ranges profile shows only the stocks that MarketAlpha's proprietary tight-range detection has flagged as consolidating, confirmed as of the previous trading day's close. They are grouped by industry, sized by market capitalization, and colored by today's change from the previous close, so you can watch coiled setups and catch the moment one starts to expand.

Range compression is one of the most reliable precursors to a strong directional move. Tight price action means agreement between buyers and sellers, and when that agreement breaks, the resulting expansion often travels fast. This map gives you the whole market's coiled inventory on one screen.

info

Tight-range detection is proprietary and confirms consolidation as of the previous session's close. Today's color then shows you which of those coiled names are starting to move.

Strategy Focus

  • Track every tight-range setup in the market in one view
  • Catch expansion moves as they start, when a coiled box turns deep green or red
  • Spot industries full of consolidating names, groups winding up together
  • Prepare breakout entries before the move rather than chasing after it
  • Watch both directions: compression resolves down as often as up

Metrics Behind the Map

  • Tight Range: MarketAlpha's proprietary tight-range detection, confirming price consolidation as of the previous trading day's close. It highlights coiled price action that may precede an expansion move.
  • Market Capitalization ($): The total dollar value of a company's outstanding shares, keeping the most significant names visually prominent.
  • Change From Close (%): The percent change between the last traded price and the previous day's close, showing which consolidations are breaking and in which direction.
